Part I

'First One To Die Loses Part I' was released with minimal hype in February1998, premiering at the Barry Bingo Hall during the tea-and-a-sandwich half time bingo break. Expected to have a limited art house release, within months it had made household names of Harri Grace and Wil Rees, and in Flash Del Montay and Ice Phoenix, had created two of its generations most defining characters. "I think the thing that really appealed to audiences," recalls director Reg Noyes, "was that amidst the violence and the brutality of the film, it was essentially a story of two lost souls trying to find their place in the world."

Shot on a shoestring budget, the film was groundbreaking in that it was set entirely indoors. "I pretty much didn't see the sun for the entire period we were filming," laughs Wil Rees (Ice Phoenix), "but I think that that helped me appreciate and convey the feelings of confinement and claustrophobia that Ice was experiencing.""The thing that amazes people nowadays is that we didn't use a single stuntman," says Harri Grace (Flash Del Montay), "I lost count of the amount of times I risked my life. But I always knew it would be worth it, and whenever I experienced any doubt, I would simply ask myself, what would Flash do?"
